While it might not sound ideal to some, taking a road trip as a family is one vacation that your family is sure to remember for the rest of their lives. Whether it’s because you had so much fun the whole time or ran into some bad situations that you had to work through together, every family should have the experience of a road trip at least one. So if you’ve yet to try this undertaking, here are three things that will help you prepare for a fun and enjoyable experience during a family road trip.

Get Each Kid Their Own Stuff

Going anywhere with kids can be a challenge. But when you’re going to be spending hours stuck with your kids in the car each day, you might start to wonder how you’ll survive. To help with this, Erin Gifford, a contributor to Travel Channel, suggests that you give each kid their own stuff while in the car. Gather together small backpacks or bags for each of your children and fill them with their own snacks, books, games, and toys. By doing this, you’ll hopefully be able to avoid a lot of the fighting and bickering that so many families have experienced on past road trips.

Plan Rest Stops Strategically

Even if you have a pretty tight schedule for getting to certain places at certain times, it’s not going to do anyone any good to be cramped up in the car for more than a few hours at a time. Because of this, you should plan to make rest stops often and strategically. According to Pamela Hayford, a contributor to USA Today, try to stop at places where you and your kids will be able to run around and get a little exercise. Not only will this help you kids better manage their time in the car, but it will help to keep you as the driver in a better state of mind when behind the wheel, which could be the difference between getting in a car accident and safely making it to your destination.

Pack Some Healthy Foods To Eat

Being on the road for days at a time can really do a number of your diet. While you might enjoy the ease and convenience of getting fast-food throughout your trip, it’s still important that you and your family eat healthy foods that will fuel your body. To help with this, Suzanne Rowan Kelleher, a contributor to TripSavvy.com, recommends that you pack some healthier food along with you as well. Try to bring things that will last for at least a few days so you can have healthy food throughout your whole trip.

If you’ve got your first road trip for your family planned in the near future, consider using the tips mentioned above to help make it a success.
