Most parents would like their children to grow up into healthy adults who make positive choices for themselves.  What a lot of moms and dads don’t realize, however, is that healthy adults start as healthy children.  By educating your children now about the best choices to make for their well-being, they will carry the knowledge on with them into adulthood.

That’s not to say that you have to enroll them in a nutritional course to get the message across. Here are some of the simplest and most straightforward ways to encourage a healthy lifestyle in your children.

Encourage Movement

In this modern age of technology doing a lot of the work for us, people spend a lot less time moving around than they did one hundred years ago.  It’s essential that kids are encouraged to get up and get moving at least a few times a day.

If your kids play video games, try to find a balance between sitting downplaying, and getting up and running around the backyard for a while.  Teaching them the skill of knowing when it’s time to balance static energy with movement will stick with them over the years.

Lead As an Example

It’s one thing to tell your kids what they should be doing, and another to lead by example.  By showing them what to do rather than just spouting out orders, you will have much more of an impact.

Show them that you eat vegetables, read books, exercise, and whatever else that you instill on them is an integral part of a balanced lifestyle.

Reward Good Behavior

A huge motivation for your kids following direction and making healthy choices is to reward their behavior.  Positive reinforcement is an opportunity for them to feel pride about following through with their commitments.

You can use any kind of reward that works for your family personally, from giving extra privileges to getting a new toy.  It’s up to you to decide what will be the most effective.

Stress the Importance Of Sleep

A lot of kids resist bedtime because they’re so excited and wound up that they don’t want the day to end.  However, it’s essential for your child’s psychological and physiological development to get enough sleep recommended for their age.

If your child is having trouble falling asleep at night, you may want to start looking into the reasons behind it.  It could be a question of too much screen time before bed, too much sugar, or perhaps they need a nighttime ritual to start giving them sleep cues.

Although there is no quick fix solution for everyone, through trial and error, you’ll eventually find a solution that works for you and your children to help ease them into a much needed full nights rest.
